Baby Tic Tac Toe

Baby Tic Tac Toe was one of four First Tooth baby earth ponies introduced in this set.  She was designed after the Twinkle Eye pony Tic Tac Toe, and had the same colouring and basic symbol design. She also had a first tooth. She was featured in one of the new baby earth pony poses - the pose would be used again in later sets, for ponies which were not technically First Tooth babies.

This set was on sale in North America in 1987, and reached the UK in 1988. It was also sold in most European countries in 1988. The box designs were the same across most releases, with only Italy having it's own style of box. There are minor differences in the box layout in English between the UK and North America, such as spelling changes, but the easiest way to tell a UK box at a glance is the type of hole punched at the top. The box shown below is from the US, as it has a hook rather than a hole punched.  The accessories, however, are the same as in the UK.

Aside the unique Italian box (in which the pony had the same accessories as above), there were two other unique releases within Europe. One was the Dutch My Little Pony club promotional card version, where the baby pony came only with a single toothbrush (poor mite!).

The set were also sold on card in Spain, where they had a reduced number of accessories (namely comb, ribbon, toothbrush and toothpaste). These accessories were still the same colour as that sold in the main boxed release, just pared down to the essentials. The back of the Spanish card featured different artwork to that on the box.

Baby Tic Tac Toe's Character

Baby Tic Tac Toe (in fact, the loose baby pictured above) was my childhood First Tooth baby, which meant that I paid attention to her appearances when she showed up on screen or in the comic. She didn't have a major role in the animated episodes, although she did appear - but she did occasionally pop up in the comic stories. One story was about the baby ponies setting up their own club, and Baby Tic Tac Toe installed herself as president, by instructing all the other babies to write to her in order to be members. Clearly someone organised!

UK Comic, 1988

Although the UK game name is noughts and crosses, Baby Tic Tac Toe did play "Tic Tac Toe" in the comics, and she was definitely a part of the bad-tempered posse of Baby Ponies whose bad behaviour led to them being teased by slitherwigs and dancing up ladders as they tried to find Lullabye Nursery once again. (Majesty could be really cruel when teaching kids a lesson, I'm telling you!)
