Tic Tac Toe in the UK

Tic Tac Toe was introduced in 1987, and was sold simultaneously in North America and in the UK. She had a very dynamic colour scheme, and was the only Twinkle Eye to have orange eyes (orange is not a common pony eye colour in general). The fact that she was chosen as part of the UK set is interesting given her name, as Tic Tac Toe is the American word for what we call "Noughts and Crosses". Hasbro UK must have decided that, although the name had no cultural meaning here, it would pass with UK kids.

The card that Tic Tac Toe was sold on in the UK is very hard to find, and there is a notable difference between her accessories in her UK (and subsequent continental European) release and her issue in North America. Most Twinkle Eye ponies were sold with shooting star combs, and Tic Tac Toe conformed to this specification in the UK - but not in North America, where her hair accessory was a brush. She was sold with a round puffy sticker in the UK release, as can be seen in the above image.

Tic Tac Toe was pictured on the back of her card.

Tic Tac Toe in Other Places

Tic Tac Toe was probably available in Italy in around 1987, as she appears on the Italian insert for that year. She was also sold in German speaking countries and in France on a different style of card in around 1988 - she appears on the insert for France for that year. Her name in Germany was "Trixi", which I think is pretty cute.

This card had an orange border, and featured Locket and Fizzy on the front. The release had no sticker. The accessories are on the same theme, although there is slight shade difference between my packaged ponies. The German carded pony appears to have a bluer ribbon and a slightly lighter comb shade, but whether this is universal or a batch difference because of the different year of release is unclear.

Tic Tac Toe's Character

Tic Tac Toe was introduced in a story in issue 42, when she and her fellow new Twinkle Eyes were found/rescued from the Cave of Jewels. Although all of them were initially shy and not really knowledgeable about Ponyland, they all settled in fine and Tic Tac Toe had several stories in which this shyness played no part.

Oddly, given the cultural weird with regards to her name, Tic Tac Toe's UK backcard story mentions 'Tic Tac Toe' as her favourite game, and that she is so good at it the other ponies have to take turns in playing her. Though her fact file entry does not give any hint to magic, her comic appearances often referred to enchanted game pieces and once, a big black box which had some kind of magic about it.
