Beddy Bye Eye Baby Shady

Baby Shady was sold as part of the Beddy Bye Eye Baby set in North America in 1985-6. The set was also sold in Benelux countries in translated boxes (as pictured below). She came with an array of accessories, in order for her new guardian to take good care of her. Although based on the adult So Soft pony Shady, she is a much brighter neon colour plastic (although her colouring is not as bright as that used in 1987 for the Movie Star pony Shady in the UK and Europe). Baby Shady has no alternate versions and was never sold in the UK.

Unlike the UK Play and Care Set box, the Beddy Bye Eye baby box made a direct connection between mother and baby pony. The set name was on the top flap, while the front of the box proudly announced that Shady now had a baby. The box featured Baby Heart Throb and Baby Ribbon on the top flap and Baby Lofty and Baby Lickety Split on the bottom corners. All six characters featured on the back of the box.

Baby Shady is prone to discolouration and head-body mismatch, as can be seen in the above Mint in Box image.

Although she was never sold in the UK, Baby Shady had quite a distinctive comic personality in the UK comics, which may suggest that her release was under consideration before finally being rejected. Like her mother, Shady, she had hallucinogenic sunglasses which allowed her to see things that weren't really there.

She also had a boat named after her, called "The Baby Shady", and its crew would regularly come and visit.

She was also a bit mischievous, helping Gingerbread play a prank on Princess Ruby with squeaky-button gingerbread men.

My baby Shady, pictured at the top of this page, was a sweet sixteen gift from my first ever pony trading partner in the US, who is sadly no longer with us.
