Summer Wing Pony Buzzer

Buzzer was one of six small butterfly ponies introduced as part of the Summer Wing set in 1988. Although the size of a baby pony, she is actually meant to be an adult, just built on a miniature scale. Unlike the flutter ponies, Summer Wing ponies had static wings, which were made of one piece of plastic held down by a square stopper in the middle of the back.

Buzzer was sold in the UK and in North America in the same style of box. The main difference was the way the card was hooked at the top, as well as Hasbro's UK distribution address on the bottom.

Italy was an outlier, as the box there was blue. In other places it seems to have been yellow.

Summer Wing Ponies came with metallic ribbons and flower picks, like the Flutter Ponies, but the centres of the flower pick flowers were not coloured.

"Frankenbuzzer"

At the end of the UK line, some pony parts were put together in weird ways to create 'hybrid' or frankenponies. While this site is not really about Nirvana ponies, enough weird Buzzers have emerged for it to be worth mentioning on this page.

Frankenbuzzer
"Frankenbuzzer"

The above pictured pony was one of these end of line put-together jobs. This pony has not been assembled by a collector, but in a factory at the end of line! Her body is Buzzer's body, as is her mane (technically, although it could in theory be Whirly's). She has lost a wing, but the remaining one is definitely Whirly's, and her tail belongs to Flurry. Although you can't see it well in this picture, the plastic square stopper holding her wings in place is Cool Breeze's. Buzzer's body is Made in China - all known Frankenbuzzers are Made in China, although regular versions of Buzzer made in China also exist. She may have been sold in a Windy Wing box, though this is not clear - most of the Frankenponies which have come up in those boxes have been flutters.

A version with Sun Glider's wings also exists (these are yellow) and one with Starry Wings' wings (these are pink with yellow edging), as do others with the same features as mine but different colour back stoppers.

As you might have realised, Frankenbuzzers usually have added bits from Windy Wings, rather than from other Summer Wings.

Don't ask me to explain why this happened. Some things are beyond even human imagination.

Buzzer's Character

Buzzer's backcard story describes her helping a bee to find the roses, and receiving a bunch of roses in return. She appeared on the cover of Comic #88 with a bunch of flowers as well, suggesting flowers and bees (like her symbol suggests) were key to her character. The story behind the comic cover involved her using magic to help the Queen Honeybee to bring flowers into bloom, rescuing the bee's hive from an evil Witch Nightshade.

In another comic appearance, she helped Mirror Mirror and Cloud Dreamer in the search for the Autumn Princess, in order to bring about the end of Summer and allow the weather to cool down.
