Starry Wings

Starry Wings was one of six new characters released in the Windy Wing pony set in 1989. In my experience she is one of the less common ponies in the set. She was sold in the UK - and in other European countries - in the same style of pink box as was used in North America. The UK box may have had a UK stamp added to the bottom to denote the release, but I have never had a Windy Wing box so cannot be sure. In France and in German speaking countries, the boxes were translated into the respective languages. It is unknown whether they were sold in translated or English-import boxes in other parts of Europe, or how many European countries saw a release of this set.

Sunspot was sold in North America on a very similar card (no border/pink name bubbles) and with the same accessory. Some releases of the Sparkle Ponies came with free pony makeup - an offer not available in the UK.

Sunspot has fading pink hair which is often found in white on the second hand market. Some Sunspots weirdly have mane and tail rooted in different kind of pink hair, with manes that fade and tails that tend not to. This is a known anomaly but not a valuable variation - a Sunspot with original (not re-dyed) pink hair is generally more sought after.

Tinsel in Sunspot's mane can also be gold or gold-silver. It is not clear whether this gold-silver is because of age or discolouration.

Starry Wings's Character

Starry Wings did make appearances in the My Little Pony comic, around 1989. She had an association with the blue moon, and one story featured her being invited to a party by a fairy, only to discover that all the other guests had been hexed into their houses by a mischievous witch, whose footprints blocked their doors. Discovering that the witch's next target was Lullabye Nursery, Starry Wings and her companion, Sun Glider, had to find a solution from behind the sun to break the hex.
