Rattles and Tattles

Rattles and Tattles were identical twins, and one of the first newborn unicorn pairs to be sold in 1987. They were sold in the North American set, but did not make it to the United Kingdom. It's a shame, they're adorable. But they really are very alike. Unlike some other pairs, who have reversed colours, these two have the same colour scheme and symbol. Their difference is based on their pose. Technically Hasbro never designated which pony was which, but collector wisdom over decades has determined that their names should go this way around, based on how the poses/names lie in other sets (eg Sniffles and Snookums). Rattles has the head turned slightly and the right leg forward. Tattles is looking up, and has her left foot slightly forward.

The box for the Newborn twins in the North American release was quite different from the box used in the UK for the sets sold there. It featured four twinsets on the front - Sniffles and Snookums and Milkweed and Tumbleweed were on the top flap, whilst Noodles and Doodles and Nibbles and Dibbles were on the bottom front. The whole of the plastic bubble/inlay space where the ponies would have been was surrounded with a lace blanket frill.

The back of the box featured the full set of twins for the year, including some of the accessories. Unlike the UK box, which featured both stories, only one story was featured on the back of the box (below shown belongs to Rattles and Tattles).

Rattles and Tattles' characters

Rattles and Tattles had no UK comic persona, as they were not sold here, nor did they appear in the animated media. Their box story discusses their being identical twins and that others had trouble telling them apart. In the story, they meet two identical bunny twins (presumably their symbol) who also could not be easily told apart - thus making new friends.

The story also mentions a double rainbow appearing in the sky to herald the arrival of the twins. Not quite as original as being drawn into life, but still cute! This appeared on the stories for all the sets of twins, even those sold in the UK.
