Sniffles and Snookums

Sniffles and Snookums were the first newborn unicorn characters introduced into the line. They had reversed colours - one pink with purple hair and one lavender with fading pink hair. Sniffles' hair can fade to white in sunlight. Both had straight hair from release. They were sold with the same accessories in the different places they were released, but only had a sticker in the UK (though it sometimes bore the wrong names - for example, Sniffles and Snuggles.

It's clear that there were debates going on about pony names for this release before Hasbro UK ultimately decided to conform with the North American release. (I actually like Snuggles better, but that's just me).

The 1987 packaging in the UK was particularly pretty, and this was no exception. The box has similar dimensions to the release in North America and in Italy, but has different patterning. Instead of depicting the ponies on the front, it has building blocks with letters (despite them not being sold with this accessory!). Sniffles and Snookums were additionally illustrated on the side of the box (the same image appeared on both side panels).

The back of the box featured both sets sold in the UK along with their individual stories. These stories were the same as those in the North American release, with slight amendments for language (eg Mommy to Mummy).

Sniffles and Snookums's Characters

In typical UK style, for all we lost in numbers of ponies, we made up for canon weird. Nibbles and Dibbles and Sniffles and Snookums had one of the odd UK comic "birth" moments that was particularly memorable. They began as doodles - drawings done by Baby Tiddly Winks, traced by Baby Lucky, and with accessories sketched in by Nurse Gusty. This art lesson quickly became a biology lesson, however, not to mention childcare 101, when Baby Lucky (who never learned how crazy his happy-go-lucky magic was) wished they would come to life. And...they did.

Baby Lucky named the babies, and they lived in Lullabye Nursery from this point onwards. Gusty, who had adopted the role of ponyland nurse and babysitter by this point, was often directly in charge of their care. As newborns, they did a lot more babyish things than some of the baby ponies.

The Art Class That Went Wrong

Notable in the UK release and lore (and shown in the comic image, above) is that Baby Lucky determined that Sniffles was a boy, and so needed a boy's name. Sniffles is the only officially designated G1 male unicorn, but only according to the UK lore. This association did not happen in North America. He was a mischievous little tyke who liked to try and shove his sister out of the stroller when Gusty wasn't looking - but Snookums was no fool herself, and would deal with her brother by using her magic and making him sneeze. In short, they were a couple of mischievous little babies who Gusty needed to keep a close eye on.

Their box story also mentions a double rainbow appearing in the sky to herald the arrival of the twins. Not quite as original as being drawn into life, but still cute! This appeared on the stories for all the sets of twins, even those sold in the UK.

Sniffles and Snookums were one of two sets of twins who featured in the animated series. They were depicted as newborn earth ponies, each with a little pink bow. They appeared alongside the First Tooth Babies, who were their reluctant babysitters, in episodes Ice Cream Wars and The Prince and the Pony.
