Sail Away

Sail Away was the unicorn pony from the Tropical Pony set. Confusingly, she was called Hula Hula in North America, which has always felt like an administrative error, due to the mis-match symbol situation. We'll stick with Sail Away here.

Sail Away Name Card
Sail Away's UK name

Sail Away was sold with a fish comb in the UK, I think yellow. This is stated explicitly on her card. She had no ribbon. This accessory was also included in the various European releases that saw a bordered green card (maybe in translation or maybe not).

The American release came on an orange card with a collective story and was sold with a dove brush instead.

The version at the top of the page I had from brand new. She has no Pat. Pending print on her hooves, and she is slightly different in body shade from the one I acquired from the USA which does have Pat Pending on the hooves. You can see some of these small differences in the pictures below.

Sail Away's Character

Unsurprisingly, Sail Away's character was centred around her yacht/boat/whatever it is and her getting out on the water, often with Mainsail or Tug or other water-based ponies in the vicinity. One comic summed this up with a rhyme/song to the tune of "I Saw Three Ships".

Sail Away's Poem
My Little Pony Comic, UK 1991

While the pony comic was quite concrete in the fact that the Tropical Ponies lived on the Tropical Isle and had always done so, Sail Away's UK backcard story is a bit more existential. It describes her creating a sand boat and imagining travelling to such an isle. But then the sandboat is swept out to sea and Summer Heatwave states they would actually be Tropical Ponies on their own Tropical Isle. Perhaps we can see this as an origin story of sorts?

Hula Hula is explicitly mentioned in this card story hula-dancing in the palm trees. I'm going to just remind people that our names make sense ;)
