Cloud Puff in the United Kingdom

Wind Drifter was sold as one of the new characters in the second set of Flutters in 1987. As was characteristic of the new additions, she had far bolder colours, as well as a new pose introduced that year. She was sold in North America, in the UK and parts of Europe though it is not clear how widely she was distributed across the continent. As the MIB picture below shows, she can be sold with curly hair, although my loose one's hair appears to have always been straight (she belonged to a childhood friend of mine and I never remember her having curls). It is possible that both versions exist.

Cloud Puff was still available in France and in German speaking countries at least in 1988. The box art was the same as that seen in the 1987 UK release, only translated. The rainbow was also updated to the new font, suggesting that the release was in 1988 rather than 1987. This release came without a sticker, probably because of the later issue.

There are some disputes about accessories for the second set of Flutter Ponies. For me, the only realistic solution is that there are variations. We know that there are definitely ponies sold boxed with a metallic  ribbon. There are also those with narrow ribbons edged with gold. Some collectors have tried to pigeonhole specific accessories to specific regions, but I do not think it is regional. Rather, I think it may be to do with batch and what other ponies were on release around the same time.

The UK release was the only release to come with a round puffy sticker for this set.



Cloud Puff's Character

"Flutter Ponies bring good luck,
In everything they do,
No matter what misfortune brings,
Cloud Puff will care for you."
As with all of this set, Cloud Puff's UK box bore a poem, rather than a story (pictured above). Her poem suggests a pony with a kind heart. In the comics, Cloud Puff was the dreamer - often absent minded and in a complete world of her own. The other flutter ponies found her both amusing and irritating, because she never seemed to focus on the realities around her. Mind you, considering the "realities" in Ponyland, are we very surprised??
