By 1990-1, it had been some years since Twice as Fancy or Party ponies had
been on store shelves. But, for some unknown reason, Hasbro
decided to revive the concept by introducing this adorable set of
baby versions based on the original Twice as Fancy/Party Pony set.
Although inspired by those original six characters, however, there
were some changes in the style format. Three of the babies were
now different species compared to the adult versions, and four of
them were first
tooth-style baby ponies.
The Twice as Fancy Babies were offered via Mail Order in North
America in 1990-1. They were not offered in the UK, but some have
been found here as end of line clearance ponies - sometimes in
clear bags inside playsets such as the Kitchen and sometimes with
grey cardboard labels featuring no name and just a My Little Pony
rainbow. They were particularly found in the south and south east
of England in the late 1990s in this format, although they are not
common second hand finds here.
They are somewhat sought after because of their cuteness, although
they are not as uncommon (despite being mail order ponies) as some
of their fellows. They were sold with a ribbon in clear plastic
bags but had no story or backcard.
Versions exist of all six babies made in China and made in Hong
Kong. Of my six, two are from China (Milky Way and Sugarberry) and
four from Hong Kong. The variations between these versions are
relatively minor, except with Milky Way, whose streak can be at
the front of the mane (like mine) or in the middle. I am not sure
if this variation is tied to manufacture location or not.
They were available over two years, which may explain the two
different production locations.
Because these ponies were only officially sold in North America,
they only have US names.
