"These older sisters are the most elegant ponies of all,
with a delightfully graceful and glamorous look."
~Hasbro UK, 1990
The Sweetheart Sister Ponies were a new style of pony Hasbro
introduced first in North America in 1989, and then in the UK and
in parts of Europe in around 1990. Each pony was designed with a
slimmer, long-legged pose, smaller head, and long hair. This mould
style would be used again in sets in 1991 and 1992. Early
Sweetheart Sister ponies also came with a pierced ear and a floral
earring. These can get damaged - either breaking off completely or
breaking off below the flower. Although delicate, they can and do
survive and it is not uncommon to find ponies with their original
earrings.

The North American set contained six ponies, four of which made it
to the European release. The North American set also came sealed
on backcards, whilst in the UK and in Europe, they came in boxes
(much more sensible!)

The two ponies who were not sold in the UK were Frilly Flower and
Fancy Flower. And, honestly, these two have always seemed to not
quite fit the style of the rest of the set, as they have different
hair/body colours, where the other four have one colour across
their hair and body.
The four ponies sold in the UK were all the same colour, body and
hair. Their eyeshadow matched their earrings, and they each came
with a brush, floral mesh hair ribbon that also matched this
colour scheme. Things were not always quite so straightforward in
the American release, where ponies are sometimes packaged with a
ribbon more commonly associated to another pony in the set.
There are also variations in the style of ribbon sold between
Europe and North America. Thanks to Chrissytree for this
information.
In the North American release, half of this set had flower brushes
and half butterfly brushes. In the UK set, however, most had
flower brushes - Spring Song was the only butterfly ;)
