Sweet Dreams Crib Playset

As the name suggests, this was a playset on a smaller scale, issued to help take care of the large number of baby ponies that now populated the UK market. It was introduced in the My Little Pony & Friends comic in a very odd story involving Baby Starburst, who was apparently left sleeping in it in the middle of a forest for the Sparkle Ponies to find.

The crib featured a pillow, blanket and even a mobile to help baby get to sleep. It was not sold with any ponies, though the box suggests that both Baby and Newborn ponies might like to use it! The box featured Newborn pony Shaggy. This was the same box design as released in North America, but it seems to have been the standard package for the UK as well - despite the fact Newborn Ponies were not sold in the UK until 1990.

Sweet Dreams Crib box

Early releases in the UK came with a mail offer leaflet (pictured at the top of the page) which had valid offers up until Easter 1989, suggesting it was released in the UK right at the beginning of 1989. Although the insert includes ponies available in 1988, neither the insert nor Hasbro list suggest this set was released here before 1989.

In some European countries, however, it was sold a bit later in the release schedule, and so featured a box with the border patterns typical of 1990s packaging. These packages featured Mainsail under the rainbow, suggesting the playset was released in these places (Spain, probably Germany and France as well) in 1990. This box featured Baby Yo-Yo.

The set was reissued in the UK in 1990, according to the Hasbro UK catalogue. Whether the box was updated to the 1990 border/Mainsail rainbow in the UK or not is unclear, but I am not aware of any examples of this box in English. I think it likely that the same box shown above continued to be used in the UK even into 1990.

There is a variation with some of the accessories for this set. The box art pictures a pale blue stand for the mobile, but the insert (shown below) pictures a yellow one. This is not just artistic licence, as both exist, as do other colours not shown. Variations on the necklace colour are also available, and may well have just been surplus stock. This is supported by the fact that the Hasbro catalogue above does not mention a necklace being included in 1990 - though this is speculation. Mine came with the pink necklace shown - but was not sealed in package when I got it, so could have been swapped out.

The UK box also states that the playset was made in Spain, a common feature of playsets during this year and in subsequent ones.

Sweet Dreams Crib
"Pony Crib"
UK, 1989 insert

The above image is taken from the UK  1989 insert, which seems to be the only one that features it. Though it was termed "Pony Crib" on the insert, the playset itself in stores had the same name as the North American release, which was "Sweet Dreams Crib". As can be seen in this insert, the baby necklace is shown.
