Starflash

The oddly named Starflash was part of the Glittering Pony (or Glittering Sweetheart Sister Pony) set, released in North America in 1990 and the UK and Europe in 1991. The North American release had ponies on cards, but in the UK and in Europe, we continued with Sweetheart Sister Ponies in boxes, as per the previous year.

The Glittering Pony set all came with glittering star picks, and there were sometimes anomalies in the release. My Mint in Box Starflash has a raspberry pink star pick (pictured below), but the comb I am sure my childhood one came with is a lighter (still pinkish) colour, and I have seen her MIB with a different comb as well (possibly the one I remember as a child). Whether the box inlay is making the comb look darker I am not sure.

They also had floral earrings, just like the previous set, and used the same slender poses.



Starflash's Character

Starflash's initial arrival in the UK comic was a bit confusing, as she was pictured in white with dark pink hair. This was probably based on a poor promotional photo, which made her colours look a little different (purple hair often shows up dark pink in these images)

At some later point, however, the comic artists seem to have realised that Starflash was actually blue and purple, as she appeared in later stories in her own colours - in the below story, helping Moonshimmer with the flowers for Fizzy's annual Fizziwhizz night celebration.

Starflash's UK box story explained her weird name and mismatched symbol by describing a friendship between herself and a little star - she enjoying the starry sky and the star enjoying counting Starflash's hearts until it ended up making them glittery.
