Sky Rocket (Store Release)

Sky Rocket was one of the earth ponies from the Sparkle Pony release. This store-released version was available in the UK in 1989, and was sold on a card with a narrow blue border around the edge, and yellow name/set name bubbles. She was sold with a comb but no ribbon - although in Spain the release did have a ribbon. This version of Sky Rocket was bluer in colour (at least comparing mine) and no small symbol on her cheek. The pony shown above was bought new in the UK in 1989.

Sky Rocket was sold in North America on a very similar card (no border/pink name bubbles) and with the same accessory. Some releases of the Sparkle Ponies came with free pony makeup - an offer not available in the UK. She was one of very few ponies to have a recycled name in the UK.

Sky Rocket's Character

Sky Rocket was the main character in a story involving the greedy Wizard Wantall. He wanted Sky Rocket because of her ability to use stardust to turn balloons into rockets (we hope, firework rockets, otherwise this has edged into the disturbing world of mass destruction). Wizard Wantall's sidekick, Get It, made himself invisible and lured Sky Rocket away with a balloon that seemed enchanted, because it could 'speak'. Once in the Enchanted Garden, and in Wantall's hands, Sky Rocket was told she was there to make balloon rockets.

Despite the circumstances, Sky Rocket managed to send a secret signal to Twinkler and Star Hopper, who had found her bags abandoned and gone looking for her. By using the watchword 'Sparkle', Sky Rocket alerted her friends that she was in danger, allowing them to create a diversion so she could escape.

Sky Rocket was my childhood pony, so I remember reading this story a lot. I also remember Sky Rocket being an earth pony with the ability to fly, because of her magic stardust - probably on the back of a sparkling balloon-rocket...
