So Soft Taffy

Taffy was sold in the third and final full set of So Soft ponies in 1987. She was released in North America, and also in Italy, although she does not seem to have been sold anywhere else in Europe.

Taffy is one of the harder ponies to find from this set in good condition, as her fur often gets worn, discoloured, dirty or all three. Even mint on card ponies can sometimes discolour, making her more cream than white. As you can see, mine has been in the wars - I have had her since the late 1990s, and have never been able to lay my hands on an upgrade in the years since. (This is probably not helped by my being in the UK though).

Taffy's Character

Taffy's story indicates a very important life lesson, which is "don't let the mop interfere in cooking dinner." Taffy's cooking spaghetti for the ponies, except that her mop handle knocks Cupcake's extra sweet sticky stuff into the mixture, making it hard to eat and very sweet. Taffy solves this problem by adding extra sugar and spices to make the spaghetti into a dessert. A nice save, but seriously. Mops don't need to be involved in the cooking process. Not even in Ponyland.

Also, the fact that Taffy is both mopping up after Bouncy and cooking makes me think they need to treat her better. Seriously, give the girl a break - she's not Paradise Estate's housekeeper!

Interesting note on Taffy's story is that, unlike the other ponies from her year, her story features ponies from 1986 (Cupcake and Bouncy). Taffy was not sold in this release set, but it's possible that she was already in the production pipeline, and they debated whether to bring her out earlier. I imagine that if this was the case, her similarity in colouring to Truly is what delayed her until 1987.
