Sweetie in the United Kingdom.

Sweetie was sold in 1986 as part of the first set of Twinkle Eye ponies. She was one of two characters re-released in the 1987 set, which was a cut down amalgamation of two sets sold in North America between 1986 and 1987. She was meant to have curly/wavy hair. The pink streak in her mane can easily fade to white.

(Please note the card is Masquerade's, but the accessories are correct)
Thanks to Shivhae for this image.

The UK card for the second release set in 1987 is extremely difficult to find and no known Mint on Card version of Sweetie on this card is known to survive. For this reason it is not known whether she had the same accessories between 1986 and 1987, but, based on surviving German and French carded ponies from 1988, it is likely that she did.

Wait - isn't this pony called Sweet Stuff?

Well, yes and no. In North America, that was her name. But it's a bit of a vague name and doesn't really mean anything here. The UK name for this pony was Sweetie, because in the UK, sweets, or sweeties are the words commonly used for 'candy'. Her symbol was gumdrops (or marshmallows, as they sometimes get called here), so the name was much more logical. Her name did not change with the 1987 re-release. Let's be honest - Sweetie is cuter. :)

Sweetie's Character

Sweetie, along with Gingerbread, was often involved in making confectionary and cakes, especially (as her story notes, above) for the baby ponies. It's almost a shame Ponyland didn't have an on-site dentist, because I'm sure one was probably needed! Her story also mentions her collecting moondust. How she did this is unclear, especially given that she was an earth pony - but perhaps the idea was that it fell on the grass before the dew, and she was up early to gather it.

Sweetie (under the name Sweet Stuff) also had her own episode in the animated series, called Sweet Stuff and the Treasure Hunt. Strangely, this story did not focus on her ability to create sweets, but instead made out that she really didn't fit in with any of the pony groups she tried to engage with in the first half of the episode. She also annoyed a squirrel several times in her attempts to join in. Ultimately she helped solve the treasure hunt and win the game. At the end she embraced 'who she was'. Unfortunately, who she was in that episode is not who she was in Hasbro's other material. Oh well. ;)
