Speedy in 1986-7

Speedy was first released as an add on character to the North American issue in 1986. She joined the set in the UK in 1987, when she was part of the second release over here. She was also re-released in the North American set in 1987, meaning she was in production over both years. The more common standard version of Speedy is this darker coral orange as shown above, and this was the regular release in North America and the UK. This is one of the few times when the UK aligned with North America and not Europe in its releases, as a slightly different version of Speedy would be sold in France and Germany/German speaking countries in 1988.

The card Speedy was sold on in the UK is extremely rare and no UK carded example of Speedy is known to survive. It was white with a rainbow down the middle, and Speedy was pictured on the front and the back.

The accessories listed above are correct for the North American and European releases, however, and so are probably accurate for the UK release as well. In North America, she came with a scented flat sticker in 1986, and in the UK she had a round, puffy one in 1987.

Speedy's Character

As her name and symbol suggest, Speedy was the kind of pony who sped around from place to place, using her rollerskates as a medium to travel the length and breadth of Ponyland. She enjoyed a good race, and it would probably not be unfair to call her a bit of an adrenaline junkie. According to the fact file (and probably her UK backcard story), Speedy's skates were magical and allowed her to skate up into the sky as well.
