Cherry Treats

Although the Sweetberry Ponies were some of the first scented ponies to be released in the States, they were one of the last scented releases in Europe. Unlike most delayed sets, which were sold one year after the North American issue, this set was sold two years later, and essentially they seem to have been recreated for the UK market. As mentioned on the main set page, the 1988 set from North America were mostly made in Hong Kong and the earth ponies at least had forelocks. In Europe, the four ponies who saw release were made in China, and the earth ponies did not have forelocks.

The pony pictured at the top of the page is my childhood pony, bought new here in the UK in 1990.

Aside the more obvious differences, the type of plastic used for these ponies seems to differ. It is more common for the Hong Kong version to discolour, sometimes even while still on card, and tan or brown/beige versions are not unusual. The Chinese versions discolour far less, but can still discolour. The type of plastic used for Hong Kong Cherry Treats is more 'translucent' in its appearance, whereas the Chinese version appears more chalky and dense/opaque. There are also minor differences in symbol paint, and the Hong Kong one seems to have more blush.

Cherry Treats's Character

Cherry Treats's character obviously revolved around fruit, specifically cherries. Her backcard story mentions her finding a lot of cherry trees, but not being tall enough to reach the branches to pick them. Instead she had help from a flock of golden birds. This story was universal across her English language releases.

These golden birds also appeared in the comic, albeit briefly, where they were also in a helping capacity. This summoning the birds to help motif feels a bit Cinderellaish :)
