Baby Starburst


Baby Starburst was one of two earth ponies from the Playtime Baby Set. She was also sold as one of the Fancy Pants Babies in North America, although there are distinct differences between the two releases. (I thought about making separate pages for them but thought it was confusing enough already!) She was sold with an array of accessories, many of which are easily confused with other baby pony releases, and a mesh yellow bow, which was unique to her.

All of the promotional material in the UK for this set featured Baby Starburst with blue hair and no forelock (except the box art, where she appeared on the side-flap and the front in her correct colours). The Hasbro catalogue and the comic also comply with this colour scheme, but she was never sold in the UK in this form. The version without forelock release was sold in North America, and possibly other regions via import, but not in the UK. She was made in Thailand.

There are a few chief differences between the Thailand and China made versions of Baby Starburst. Firstly, as you can see from the pictures above, the China made one has a yellow forelock. Secondly, she has pink and blue moons and stars on her panties. The version made in Thailand has no coloured forelock and the pattern on her panties is yellow and blue. The two ponies also have different eye colours - the China made version has bubblegum pink eyes, whilst the Thailand made one has lavender. There are also minor differences on the body shade and the expression.

As far as I know, Baby Starburst had the same accessories between releases in North America and in Europe.

Baby Starburst's character

Baby Starburst was first introduced in an edition of the My Little Pony and Friends comic - left in the forest, asleep in the Sweet Dreams Crib. This weird turn of events happened because a cloud heard the Sparkle Ponies making decorations and misunderstood what they meant when they said they wanted a 'Starburst'. Awkward. When Napper and Twinkler headed out into the forest to look for supplies, they found the baby and the crib. Surprised would be an understatement, but they took Starburst back to their accommodation, deciding to keep her a secret until Christmas and then take her to Lullabye Nursery. As you do.

Baby Starburst was also a member of the Baby Pony Club, and was initiated into that group by Baby Quackers. Her backcard story mentions her roaming the night sky on a cloud, and the stars sprinkling stardust on her panties, giving them their pattern. I guess they must've got fed up of babysitting and dumped her in the crib...another mystery solved!
