Dainty Dahlia

Dainty Dahlia was one of four earth ponies from the Perfume Puff Pony set, which was released in both North America and in the UK in 1989. In the UK, the release coincided with the sale of the Perfume Puff Palace.

Dainty Dahlia was sold here in a US-style box, with the same accessories as those available in North America - a comb,  hair clip and ribbon. My pony is not shown wearing her original ribbon. Her hair is fading pink and can fade to white.

Like all the Perfume Puff ponies, she had a very fluffy mane and tail, which was soft and scented, like her body.

Dainty Dahlia's Character

Like all of the Perfume Puff Ponies, Dainty Dahlia lived in the Perfume Puff Palace, and was generally interested in scented, perfumey things. She did not have many story appearances in the comic, in one story, she, Sparkler and Baby Paws were doing a tour of Ponyland when they happened to stumble on a jewelled Pom-Pom, which Dainty Dahlia had previously given to Princess Pom-Pom. (Yes, we're going to talk a lot more about pom-poms now). Apparently some goblins were trying to steal the jewelled Pom-Pom, and so Dainty Dahlia tricked them by turning it into a flower, and, then, when they had discarded it, turning it back into a jewelled Pom-Pom.

All of this sounds ridiculous, and it is, but underpinning that silly is the fact that the Pom Pom signified the right to rule Pom-Pom land. The fact Dainty Dahlia was the one who gave the gem to the princess in the first place suggests either that she had a dynastic connection to Pom-Pom land herself (perhaps as a previous leader), or was heavily involved in its politics. Since we know nothing about ponies before they came to Ponyland, this does raise some less ridiculous and more interesting questions about her origins.
