Sweet Suds


Sweet Suds was one of four earth ponies from the Perfume Puff Pony set, which was released in both North America and in the UK in 1989. In the UK, the release coincided with the sale of the Perfume Puff Palace.

Sweet Suds was sold here in a US-style box, with the same accessories as those available in North America - a comb,  hair clip and ribbon. My pony is not shown wearing her original ribbon.

  Like all the Perfume Puff ponies, she had a very fluffy mane and tail, which was soft and scented, like her body.

 

Sweet Suds's Character

Like all of the Perfume Puff Ponies, Sweet Suds lived in the Perfume Puff Palace, and was generally interested in scented, perfumey things. With that said, she was also possibly the most unique of the Perfume Puff ponies, in that she was more obsessed with bath bubbles than she was actual perfume. This obsession spread beyond the confines of the Perfume Puff Palace. In one colour-in comic adventure, she used her bathtub as a boat in a boat race, while in another, she magically produced it out of nowhere in order to help a grimy frog clean up.

Sweet Suds' ability to commandeer bathroom equipment was not limited to just her own tub, but also the Scrub-A-Dub Tub, which she and Lavender Lace once sailed to the Tropical Isle in order to trade perfumes for tropical fruit. Ponyland's trade economy built, apparently, on the back of bubbles.

Perfume Puff Pony hair was always illustrated in this straight lined style, which, for me as a child, having never seen one in person, didn't really make much sense. When I first did see a Perfume Puff Pony, it also took a while to make the connection. It's just a bit too neat and tidy considering that many Perfume Puffs end up on the second hand market with decided more vertical styling.
