Daisy Sweet

Daisy Sweet was one of four earth ponies made available in the Perfume Puff Pony set, which was released in both North America and in the UK in 1989. In the UK, the release coincided with the sale of the Perfume Puff Palace, and Daisy Sweet was one of the ponies used to promote it in the comic. She was sold here in a US-style box, with the same accessories as those available in North America - a comb, flower hair clip and ribbon.  Like all the Perfume Puff ponies, she had a very fluffy mane and tail, which was soft and scented, like her body.

White Hair Variation*

Daisy Sweet has a known production variation, which is that sometimes she was sold with white hair. But this comes with a few caveats. As you can probably see from my loose pony, above, and the beautiful Mint in Box image from Shivahe, Daisy Sweet's gold hair is known to fade. My loose pony's hair is considerably paler in colour than the boxed original. So it is possible for a gold-haired pony to fade completely to white.

The differences between a white-haired Daisy Sweet and a gold one that has faded are twofold - one, the forelock being white and not gold (this often does not fade, as it is not made of the same kind of hair as the fluffy mane and tail). The second is the roots - you can often find hints of gold in the roots of a faded pony. I imagine a third way is to dismantle a pony and check her internal roots, but that is drastic and I DO NOT recommend EVER dismantling ponies unless they have clear visible evidence of serious mould or tail rust (breaking the neck seal has major implications for pony value and authenticity, as is considered irreversible damage by many collectors)

The White Haired Daisy Sweet pictured below was found by me at a carboot sale in the UK in around 1998. She was in an unsealed box, with accessories. Because the box was unsealed,  and the comb and clip have been fixed back in place, I cannot be sure whether any of them are hers -  the yellow ribbon she has in her tail came with her in the form you see it now, but I have no guarantee it came with her from new.

I have never taken her off the inlay card and she still has her mane fastened in the plastic.

White Haired Daisy Sweet - roots and forelock

As you can see from the above close-up images, she has no evidence of gold in her forelock or in her mane. Since she has been in her box, it is unlikely that she would have faded evenly to this extend - her body shows no sign of discolouration. Her box and inlay is also not faded.

This version of Daisy Sweet is reminiscent of the German Sundae Best versions of Chocolate Chip and Butter Kiss, who have alternative colour hair, but whose hair colour and texture comes from another pony in the set. Daisy Sweet basically here has Sweet Lily's hair, and it seems highly likely that if the machines ran out of gold, they just continued on in white.

I have found a few of this version of Daisy Sweet loose at carboot sales here in the UK, but since Perfume Puff ponies are not especially common here overall, it is hard to know whether this is significant. All I can say for sure that this variation seems legitimate, and was available in the UK release.

Daisy Sweet's Character

Like all of the Perfume Puff Ponies, Daisy Sweet lived in the Perfume Puff Palace, and was generally interested in scented, perfumey things. In one story she and Sweet Suds used their unique talents to help Rob Rabbit and some elves to cross the stream. In Daisy Sweet's case, this meant blinking and creating a bridge of daisies across the water for them to get to the other side.

My Little Pony Comic, 1989

Perfume Puff Pony hair was always illustrated in this straight lined style, which, for me as a child, having never seen one in person, didn't really make much sense. When I first did see a Perfume Puff Pony, it also took a while to make the connection. It's just a bit too neat and tidy considering that many Perfume Puffs end up on the second hand market with decided more vertical styling.
