Gingerbread

Gingerbread was one of four new earth pony characters introduced in the Candy Cane set. She was sold in the UK via both the official release and via the Woolworths import, meaning that she was sold in both bordered and yellow boxes in the UK. The accessories were the same between releases - a sweetie comb, hairclip and ribbon. The pony pictured above has her original curl.

Gingerbread was officially sold under this name in the UK, and appears with this name both in Hasbro's catalogue and in the UK comic. (If you squint, you can also see the name on the boxed pony, above).

She was the only pony to change her name between UK and North American releases, and she is also the only pony to have a recycled name in the UK and not in North America (where recycling was basically a rite of passage by 1990).

Although she was always called Gingerbread in all UK media, however, I have a surviving wishlist from my childhood, which must date to around this time. On it, I wrote, "Candy Cane Molasses".

This was years before the internet, long before I knew that America had its own names for some of the ponies. The only way I could have known that name was by seeing her in stores in American boxes. This suggests that the box was not altered for sale in the UK, and that Gingerbread was also sold here under the name Molasses, even though it was not official.

Gingerbread's Character

Gingerbread only ever appeared in the UK comic under her official UK name. Her character connected to the making of gingerbread, unsurprisingly, given her symbol and identity. In one story, she helped replace invitations to a party, which had blown away on the wind. Her invitations were gingerbread men with names written on.
